The University of Michiganwolverines has 25 varsity sports teams who compete in the Big Ten Conference, except for the men’s ice hockey team . The Michiganwolverines enters the top five of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Director’s Cup. It is an award given to the universities and colleges with the utmost success in college sports.
Michiganwolverines has an all-time winning percentage of .745 for their famous and best-supported football team. The Michiganwolverines is the most successful football program in college football history. In 1902, Michiganwolverines won their first Rose Bowl game and won an NCAA record of 849 games in 2005. The Michiganwolverines football team won 11 national titles: 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, 1923, 1932, 1933, 1947, 1948 and 1997.
There are other varsity teams in the University of Michigan such as: baseball, cross country, diving, golf, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, tennis, track/field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
Michiganwolverines has a major rivalry between Ohio State and the University of Notre Dame. The Michiganwolverines and Ohio was always the last game of the regular season. In 1887, the Michiganwolverines football team taught the game to a group of Notre Dame students. Michiganwolverines won the game by 8 to nothing. Since then the game traditionally takes place there early in the season. The Michiganwolverines played Notre Dame 33 times, more than in any other school outside the Big Ten Conference and the Michiganwolverines leads Notre Dame with an all time record of 18-14-1.
The Michiganwolverines ice hockey team is one of the popular team. The home contest usually takes plays at the Yost Ice Arena. The Michiganwolverines ice hockey team also got an NCAA record with nine NCAA national titles: 1948, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1964, 1996, and 1998.
Other successful teams are: The Michiganwolverines men’s swimming team won the 1996 NCAA championship; Michiganwolverines field hockey team won the 2001 NCAA championship; Michiganwolverines filed hockey team won the 2001 NCAA title and it is also the first national title in a women’s team sport; and in June 2005, Michiganwolverines women’s softball team won the 2005 Division 1 NCAA Softball Championship.
